The Imperfect Residence combines Wabi Sabi philosophy with modern geometries in a Hong Kong apartment.

+
Geometrical fragments of marble and oxidized metal are integrated into the wooden floor and plaster wall, reminiscent of sculptures in a garden.

About

The proposed concept goes beyond the visual and is based on the ancient Japanese philosophy of Wabi Sabi, which embraces beauty that is imperfect, impermanent and incomplete. The Residence inspires to accept the beauty of imperfection and incompleteness, setting the residents’ free from the everyday.

The Sanctuary

The elevated platform emerges as one opens the wall panel at the top of the marble riser. Inspired by traditional Genkan, which is meant to separate the outside world and embarks the buddhist path to enlightenment. This elevated platform gives a psychological transitions everytime the occupants steps into the bedroom. The platform runs parrallel with the long desk which frames the panoramic window, residents can enjoy the everchanging play of shadows as day turns into night.

“On a psychological level, the design should make the occupants feel relaxed, like a little oasis away from the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong.”

+
The dressing room merges with the bathroom, providing an uninterrupted, fluid ambience, making it easy to wind down after the busy day and prepare for a good night’s sleep.
+
Boldly and seamlessly, the bathroom ritual is initiated by stepping on to the flushed marble podium and up to the basin, or sinking into the generous bathtub.
